Langkawi Trip | #FeatureFriday2018

Prior to actually going on this trip, I had actually never heard of Langkawi before (oops), though now, having been there, I don't understand why this isn't coming up as a travel / lifestyle YouTuber hot spot. The place is SUPER affordable, and is chock-full of all kinds of beach-y activities and fresh, stupidly affordable seafood.
So, obviously, in true vacation spirit, our family hit up just about everything that we could within the span of 3 days.

Let's get started, shall we? :)

The map pictured on the left is the "island map" that was in the Langkawi airport. Filled with all kinds of icons and information to give arriving tourists a general idea of the island.

-------------------------

Langkawi

This first part is actually from the Singapore airport. lol XD
Do you recognize the Asian lady in the watch ad? Yes, that's right. It's Liu YiFei / Crystal Liu who will be starring in live-action Mulan! If you haven't read my two cents about that decision, check it out here :)

Liu YiFei and Cate Blanchett in ads. USA, can we please get this mainstreamed here?
I actually recognize people in ads! lol

Our family stayed at a seaside resort-ish location, which was quite cool, except that you could only swim in the pool, not the sea that you could see from your room. Sad :(

view of the building where our room was

view just past the pool, this was a cool view in it of itself, but then when the tide came in, the whole thing was covered in water, so that was very interesting to watch

they even had the chocolatey breakfast cereal of my childhood here!
I haven't had this thing in like...10 years!
I shamelessly ate 2 bowls lol XD

something you may not see in an American resort, they had signs on the ceiling to direct their predominantly Muslim population in the direction of which they were to pray

group photo outside of the resort office building
the resort staff and family also evidently live there...? we weren't sure lol

I realize this isn't a TON of information, but I wanted to just give you a look at what the experience was like.

-------------------------

Fooding

The main thing Langkawi has going for it as far as food was typically summed up in one word: "Wonderland". This outdoor restaurant is SO popular during meal time, you either show up early and line up to get in, or you have to call in to have a table reserved lest you be stuck with a 1 hour (or longer) wait.

full house, evidently like this ALL THE TIME, EVERY DAY.

Fried prawns (large shrimp, also what the UK and British colonies typically just call shrimp), seafood fried rice, and CA-LA-MA-RI. OMG.
These were SO GOOD, SO FRESH, and as you can see in just a second...SO CHEAP!!

Can you even process how cheap this meal is?
We ate an INSANE amount of seafood, and the number you see there, RM 140.30, is the number in USD we would have paid if we were to eat this same meal here.
However, we were in Langkawi, so when you convert our receipt to USD, divide that number by 3.
Yep. That's right. You heard me.

The juice was a blend of (I think...?) apple and pear juices?
Freshly squeezed. YUM.

I ate SO. MUCH. CALAMARI on this trip, I loved every second, and I still want to eat more.
You would think eating that much would satiate you for life, but NO.
You would be wrong. You can't have too much calamari. Let's just settle that here.

-------------------------

Jet-Skiing and Langkawi Wildlife

So, I've never actually been jet-skiing before and given my general actually capable of making me break out in a cold sweat fear of deep water (and not being able to see what's under me), I didn't want to overthink it because I had actually kind of decided years ago that jet-skiing looked fun and that I wanted to try it.

Langkawi is literally the paradise of water sports, so when Mum managed to find us a good deal to go jet-skiing (we had paid for a 2.5 hr package, but another couple was going to go on the trip as well and had paid for the 3 hr package, so the owner of the company told us to keep quiet about the price difference and we'd get a cheeky 30 min extra for free), I didn't want to stress myself out into saying no.

1) Demonic monkeys. I don't care what anyone says, I was attacked and yelled at by Malaysian monkeys as a child and I hate them with a passion. Yes, I realize that I was born in the year of the monkey, but whatever.

2) Fishies! Lots of them! Of all colors and sizes! There was apparently a giant barracuda under the dock that we could try to find, but frankly, I don't want to find something like that when I'm in the water with him. *cold sweat

3) An island that we had to "pull over to" (oh, don't mind me as I pull over to a freaking ISLAND) because Mum ran into a plastic bag in the ocean and it got caught in her engine so they had to pull us over to take it out had a large cliff face that you could kind of go down certain sections of had crabs and little snails all over it.

Ash and I discovered the snails on accident...by stepping on their pointy little shells with bare feet.
Ouch < Oops in this case hehe :P

The crabs were cracking us up because they'd hide in the rocks, scurry out and attempt to cross whatever rock they were trying to cross, only to get swept into the ocean by a wave crashing up towards us. lol XD We stood there cheering on the crabs for a while haha XD
this island is currently left alone as a haven for eagles
there were at least 3 different species there.
just look at them all! O_O

1. beach (the one we "accidentally" pulled over at
2. pieces of coral, which while depressing that it's dead, was cool to find all the same
3. in the area called Hill of the Maiden or something, where the hills, if looked at a certain way, look like a pregnant woman lying down. The echoes in the area were cool too :)

Mum was having a little TOO much fun in my opinion, having been jet-skiing before and completely disregarding my fears of deep water and basically sabotaged me several times, almost causing me to flip over. On the one hand, the guides had explicitly told us not to flip the machines to avoid complications in getting back, which annoyed me in the professional sense in that Mum was completely ignoring them. And on the other, by far the most annoying part of the jet-ski trip, was that while I realize she was having fun, but it was at MY expense, which was not cool.

I won't share the specifics here (you can ask me later), but if your version of having fun means that you're completely disregarding someone else's genuine fears and anxieties, that's not okay. Just don't do it. Makes you seem like a jerk, and yes, this was my mother, and yes, I told her more than once that I wasn't cool with it.

Don't be a jerk, guys.

Just putting that out there.

-------------------------

Parasailing

I'm not going to elaborate, but Ash wanted to do it. Mum was heavily pushing the "once in a lifetime" thing and my serious fear of heights wanted to kill me when I said, "FINE. Let's just get this over with." We were up there for ten minutes, which was plenty long enough for me, though Ash said she wanted to be there longer. #nope

The time going up and coming down was spent with my eyes shut, trying not to die. Ash was cheering and kicking her legs around enthusiastically, which made us swing around and I wanted to kill her multiple times. At one point, she was like, "Jie! Look! Isn't this awesome?" and I was like "STOP TELLING ME TO LOOK!"

Once we were UP there though (no feeling of going up or down, just kind of coasting), I felt okay enough to at least take a peak. Saw a jellyfish, which given that I saw it from that high up, meant BIG jellyfish. The view WAS gorgeous, but then we started coming back down and I was done with my adventure at that point.

We landed on the boat and Mum was like, "So? How was it? Was it fun? Will you do it again?" Ash responded with something along the lines of "yes, wow, it was awesome, and yes" and I was kind of like "my life is done, my brain hates me, I'm pretty sure I'm sunburnt now, thank you for letting us try this, but HECK NO."

-------------------------

I'm not really sure what caused it, maybe it was the 3 hours on the jet ski or the 10 minutes being abnormally close and exposed to sunlight, but Ash and I had a horrendous sunburn for the following week. We were red as lobsters, sensitive to literally EVERYTHING we came into contact with, and in so much pain...

All in all, it was a very special adventure, all packed into one day, and I am quite proud of myself for actually being brave enough to stick it out and go through with it. Thanks, Mum, for being generous with your $$ and paying for us to experience these things!

And thank YOU all, for reading this and for joining me in my adventures.

A Truly Girly Sunday | #WeeklyWednesday2018

Hello, all! Hope that those of us who have started back to school are doing okay?
Anyone lost their sanity yet? Show of hands?

... no? Awesome.

So, not much has happened this week, but a lot did, in fact, happen in one day!
Namely, Sunday, if I'm being specific, so let's just jump into it. :)

-------------------------

Macy's Homecoming Modeling...Thingy

No, before you freak out, I didn't model lol XD

Could you just imagine what a mess THAT would be to look at? Me and my not-so-funny social anxieties + carefully controlled stage fright would make a fantastic combination before the masses.

Yep. NO.

A friend of mine, Alex, did and so in true big sisterly fashion, I went, along with Mum, April, and Keona to show our support for our dear girl. We've never been to something like this before, despite my having done modeling photoshoots (as the photographer). Here is video footage of the three dresses she modeled. Quick disclaimer, the only things she had full control over were her hair and earrings. Everything else was either of limited choice or completely taken over by macy's staff.

Given that she and the other students were given VERY limited instructions on how to model, where to stand, etc, I think they all did a great job. I feel like a public display like this should have given the students a practice session or two to practice their walking (at least in the shoes for the girls), whether in the exact location or not isn't really important. They were told to stop at certain places and as you can see from the video, they were literally told to stop behind a PLANT as the lady went on to describe what but their SHOES in detail, at the very moment it was completely out of view from the audience!

Maybe it was their first time doing something like this, maybe not.
But all in all, we enjoyed ourselves and it was a very special experience for Alex.
We were very happy for our girl and above all, glad that we could be there for her.

Unfortunately, we had to run to our NEXT stop, so we weren't able to wait to grab pictures with our model after the event was over (they were given some token gifts from macy's as payment, as this was technically volunteer work).

-------------------------

Pita Alley Luncheon with April

Keona went home after this (it had been a long day for her), so it was just Mum, April, and I headed out for lunch at a local Greek joint owned by a Lebanese family, Pita Alley! They serve things like gyros (gyro meat = lamb + beef), shwarma, baklava, and all manner of things involving hummus or olives.

Happy pic as we order food!
It was kinda close to their closing time, so it was no wonder that the restaurant wasn't full.
It's actually quite popular!

Mummy, looking absolutely precious, with her bowl of hummus

April ordered stuffed grape leaves (I think they're called dolma?) and a bowl of hummus.

I got meat kalawa, which is hummus (all over the surface of the plate) with some kind of meat
(in my case, gyro), grilled red onions, almonds, and golden raisins.
You eat it with pita bread and it was delicious!

It was my first time having meat kalawa and April's first time at Pita Alley, so all in all, we were all very happy foodies and I had enough of my lunch + Mum's hummus leftovers combined to take to lunch this Tuesday at work! :) Win-win!

Reaction Video to Peter Hollens' "Tightrope"

New video time! I had shared this on Facebook as the #MusicMonday2018 for this week, but had wanted to wait till now to post it to the blog so that this week's post would have a little more substance to it :)

We watched Peter Hollens' cover of Tightrope from the Greatest Showman (you can read about my initial reaction to The Greatest Showman here and the fun tidbit I found out about the story of the Snow Queen here).

The video was done with the help of my new friend (and now YT collaborator), Aletheia from @AletheiaCantabile! You heard about her last week :P

Update, I Turned 26! | #FeatureFriday2018

(left to right), Mummy Loh, lil' sis Ash or Pippy Loh,
me, and Daddy Loh
It's a short post this time, guys, and it's about something that a few of you were curious about...how I spent my birthday! I received a few suggestions on what to do to celebrate and I'm really sorry to let you guys down...but I honestly did NOTHING.

Yep. That's right, you heard me.

This post is almost a month late (meh), but I figured I'd let you guys in on what all went down on my birthday given that I had honestly planned on nothing happening! It was at the end of July, and unfortunately for the birthday girl (c'est moi), it was also the beginning of finals week!
Yaaaaaayyyyy... ba-dum tss! Not so great.

But you know what made it awesome?

My amazing family.

BEHOLD THE EPICOSITY that all disappeared into my belly within the space of like...3 hours lol XD

Dad made, from scratch (yes, the pasta was box pasta, but whatever), a meat and spinach lasagna.
Seriously, guys, I will never, in my life, say no to lasagna for dinner. This was DELICIOUS.
There was also, according to him, a terrifying amount of mozzarella cheese (yes, I like mozzarella lol) and
Mum, unknowingly, was like "Hmm...I wish there was more cheese. Like...what?! lol XD

Dad also had the foresight to make a large pan so I was happily stuffing my face with lasagna for the next couple of days due to take this with me to work throughout the week!
Needless to say, I was a happy foodie <3

Look at this GORGEOUS CAKE.
Lemon (box) cake made by Mum, the jam in the inside is made from fresh blueberries that Mum had cooked into a sauce of sorts.
The cake was two separate pieces that were "cemented" together by the jam (or whatever) and then the decorated HOMEMADE (from heavy whipping cream being whipped
for a good like...20 min or something like that) cream was piped on in gorgeous fashion by Ash.

There's also a lavender blueberry something in there, though I'm unsure if that's in the cake, the sauce, or the cream.
All you need to know...is that this cake was delicious and it looked and felt SO DARN FANCY.
Guys, you can't BUY SOMETHING LIKE THIS anywhere for a remotely reasonable price!
And my family made it for me and OMG I'm gonna cry now TT-TT

Yes, there were also birthday presents and other things from both my dear family and close friends, but I'm not gonna be placing those here because...well, I'm not going to. lol

If you were one of those, know that your love and generosity was greatly appreciated and that I felt truly blessed that week. God is good, all the time, and I am genuinely looking forward to all that He will take me through in the coming year.

Now 26, which is officially closer to 30 than 20 (oh boy...),

Saying Hello to Fall 2018 | #WeeklyWednesday2018

We are BAAAAAACK to blogging, guys!
Also...Oh. My. Goodness. Has this been a crazy week for anyone else?!

From getting my own school / assistantship work and whatnot in order to meeting new students (and helping a Singaporean student named Aletheia (you'll be hearing a lot more about her from now on!), this week has just been a whirlwind!

I'm just gonna hit some of the main highlights of things that I actually got pictures of lol XD

-------------------------

Ash Moving Back to Champaign

Real quick, we amazingly managed to squeeze in a quick meetup with an old SIUC alumni from a year or two ago, Yui-chan from Japan! We have missed this sweet girl very much and we are mega jealous of the cool internship she has working in Disney Epcot down in FL! :D

Okay, so let's get the sobbing, doting older sister thing out of the way. I'm kidding, I didn't cry. My kid sister's in college, her going away every semester is a thing, and it's something I need to stop complaining about lol

We went up to Champaign on Friday with two car loads of her stuff, dropped them off at her new apartment and then went for dinner at...*drumroll* Ozu Ramen. lol XD I'm sure you're 100% unsurprised at this point.

sister wefie in Ozu Ramen :)
LEFT) must. have. TA-KO-YA-KI (Japanese octopus balls)!! xoxo
RIGHT) shoyu ramen, honestly don't think I'll get it again. It was a bit too salty for my taste
and I wasn't a fan of how thick the broth was...oh well.

We went to WalMart later that evening to pick up her overnight essentials and then again on Saturday to pick up other apartment necessities (i.e., lighting, etc.). I actually "took off" on that day to take care of some of my own early Fall clothing shopping. The WalMart in Champaign has a better selection than Carbondale, so I took advantage of that. I managed to find two new pairs of jeggings and a new top for late Fall / early Winter :)

We went to Olive Garden for Saturday lunch as well.

One of the best deals at Olive Garden.
Unlimited soup + salad for $8.49 (I think)
Pictured above is the minestrone soup and their house salad.

General Updates School and New Projects

I'll just start the updates here. Also, how fun is this HILARIOUS unintentional twinning with my Indian bro, Kevin, from church?! XD

School:
I'm taking 3 classes for this semester...which is is my FINAL semester and I'll be graduating in December!! O_O Gonna have to figure out my next move with job-hunting, so please be praying for me!

God has continued to bless me with a great graduate assistantship that I get both a paycheck and a tuition waver from. Praise the Lord! Also, due to the new TAs that have been hired, our bosses saw fit to have a quick office luncheon to introduce the new people, hit the highlights and provide some disclaimers about things that could go haywire on the job and got us these delicious Panera lunchboxes. I got the Green Goddess Greek salad and the Italian sandwich. Yum!

New Projects:

Can we just say LOTS. OF. YOUTUBE. VIDEOS?!

Remember Aletheia who I mentioned earlier? She's a Singaporean grad student, obtaining her Master's in music. She is now HERE. In Carbondale! She stayed with us for a little less than a week and we'll be doing ALL KINDS of music collabs for as long as our time here in C'dale overlaps! Here is her YouTube Channel if you want to check out her piano covers.

We've got 2 videos planned already, one coming out in September and another for Nov - Dec. Look out for them!!

I've also got a Disney Villain video that's about 60% completed right now, in addition to a few things with Ash (still in the works).

Lots of exciting things coming your way, guys! :)

-------------------------

Reaction Video to The Hound + The Fox's "The Rose"

Speaking of new videos... :P
Since Ash is now back in Champaign, this new video by H+F meant that I needed to get someone else to stand in to get past my awkward lonely state lol XD

-------------------------

For those curious, yes, we did in fact go to see Crazy Rich Asians the Thursday after it premiered, but I'll wait till I've read the book to post my official review / opinion about it. Will update with the blog link when the post is up! :)

For now, I'll just say that it's not really child-appropriate in certain scenes (due to the age of our protagonists and the general premise for the movie) and it is definitely a little too kissy-faced and occasionally raunchy for Christian audiences.

Well, that's it from me this week! Hope you all are having a great one!
Leave a comment below with what you guys have been up to! I'd love to hear from you. :)
