Springfield + Champaign | #WeeklyWednesday2018

on the way to the #adventurebuddies wedding!
photo cred: Ash

It has been a jam-packed week and I finally feel like the year has STARTED.
It's close to the end of the month already, but eh. Better late than never, right?

-------------------------

Friday: Ash's BACK + Juan Family Dinner

Ash said that there was NO WAY she was missing the Juan family dinner at our house, so we 1) told the Juans to come on Friday instead and 2) Ash came back via Amtrak on Thursday night (poor thing's train was delayed by 2 hours, so she was a starving mess from lack of dinner).

So, to begin our Friday festivities...I made food. lol XD
I made apple crescents, the Pinterest win we discovered last summer, which Ash now loves. I would say it's been steadily improving since the first time we made it.

apple crescents: croissants + apple slices + cinnamon sugar + pecans + honey (optional glaze)

The Juans came over around 5:30pm and Mom had made a fabulous Southeast Asian spread consisting of grilled chicken wings and drums, spicy squid, bean sprout and carrot stir-fry, mushroom and green veg stir-fry, and rice.

unsurprising photo taking for Instagram lol

Saturday / Sunday morning: In Springfield (for the #adventurebuddies wedding)

We set out from Carbondale shortly after 9am and arrived shortly after noon. Thank God for the hotel allowing us to check in early, because a 3 hour car ride in wedding appropriate attire and make-up just DOES NOT bode well. Especially if you're me, because, well, NO.

I was pleasantly surprised with how nice and large the room was.

Ash and I unintentionally matched for the wedding lol XD
SO MANY PEOPLE commented on the fact and we were highly amused by the end of the whole thing. I promise we weren't trying to. We were trying to match one of the wedding colors, which was blue. Which naturally, we then paired with black jacket / cardigan and then uh...whoops lol

photos courtesy of Ash with the Snow app (in case you wanted to know where the Asians are getting the filters from)

I'll update this post with the link once the #adventurebuddies' wedding post is up this Friday.

Saturday evening after the wedding was awesome. Lots of Calvary people were downstairs in the lobby catching up with friends, but our family opted for some quiet, quality time with Auntie Oi Lin. Needless to say, I've missed my second Asian family and my second Asian mom very much. It was great to hear about how they've been doing and the things God has lead them through and is still paving the way for.

If Saturday was a quiet reflective time with Auntie Oi Lin, Sunday morning was a party. Everyone had gathered downstairs for breakfast and people seemed to be appearing in waves lol XD It was GREAT FUN.

my breakfast of coffee, greek yogurt, and a small bowl of kashi cereal (I like their breakfast bars, but not their cereal, as I found out) and shaved almonds

the Juans also kindly brought me a gift of chocolate, check out this gorgeous hand-writing by Melody! I'm still working on eating this, so far so good though!

-------------------------

Sunday: In Champaign (dropping off Ash)

We set out around 10am to head to Champaign. There was a bit of a question with where we would go for lunch, but we saw DIM SUM (essentially Chinese appetizers, but there's a time limit on when they're available and only select restaurants will offer them) on a window as we walked down Green Street and you didn't have to tell US twice to go in.

The restaurant was called Mandarin Wok and I will DEFINITELY be going back there for more dim sum. I was extremely happy with the food we ordered, particularly since it has been a while since I last had dim sum. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that their tea is FREE (I love tea, what can I say?).

mulling over the menu

the Chinese menu on the wall that I'm incapable of reading XD

the menu on the left is the normal menu, the one on the right is the dim sum menu
each plate (enough for each person to have a piece of something) is approximately $3-$4

I'm already looking forward to the food, despite looking very tired here haha
photo cred: Ash

...I hate eggplant, but parents and Ash liked it, so here's a photo of stuffed fried eggplant

hong sao niu rou mian (spicy beef noodle)

siu mai (steamed pork dumpling things)

qi qiong fan (think noodle wrapped shrimp, and you'll get the idea)

pho (Vietnamese beef noodle)

fried "carrot" cake (it's really a white carrot or turnip or some kind)
I'd meant to take a picture of the whole plate, but this was so good, I almost at the whole thing without a photo haha XD

We then went to Fresh International to pick up some groceries, some for Ash, but more for home lol

Mum is mushroom hunting, so she's very focused...

we both found childhood favorites (Mum: fish satay, Me: plum candy), this face clearly runs in the family
Mum looks better though XD

classic Asian red bean buns got a cute makeover into bunnies and hedgehogs!

they lie. they don't have faces when you steam them :(
no, I never thought they did, but they SHOULD.

Durian dumpling...things...why.

We got home around 8:30pm, had a quick dinner and I decided to top off my fabulous weekend with a homemade punch of fresh strawberries, rosemary, ginger powder, and sparkling apple-pear juice (only $1 at Big Lots). It was delicious and I'll definitely be making it again.

I can't believe it's already the end of January...#adventurebuddies wedding photos will be posted as this week's #FeatureFriday2018, so look forward to it!

Reaction Video: You Are My Sunshine (The Hound + The Fox) | #MusicMonday2018

One of my oldest friends from the time that we've moved to Carbondale, Elissa, is getting married in May! What?! This is super exciting!! Also super exciting, and the reason why this is a #MusicMonday2018 post, are the following facts:

1) Elissa and her fiance, Luke, have "You Are My Sunshine" as their song
2) The Hound + The Fox made a cover of said song

and the best part

3) H+F have given us the permission to USE SAID SONG (their specific version) and perform it LIVE at Elissa's wedding.

WHOOHOO!!! :D

I was originally in charge of the music for her wedding, but due to certain circumstances, I won't be able to make the wedding :(
my heart. :(

BUT I'm making good on my promise and making sure that I secure that arrangement for her wedding.

I Dream of Jeanne Marie | #FeatureFriday2018

For this #FeatureFriday2018, I wanted to introduce you to one of the most phenomenally talented crafty ladies that I've ever met, Jeanne!! :D I have the great honor of fulfilling a bucket list item that's been on there...well, forever. I'll be learning how to sew from her this year! I'M SO EXCITED. No photos of her yet, but that'll be changed soon! ;)

I could introduce her...or she can introduce herself (yay, cop-out XD)

Hi and welcome to I Dream of Jeanne Marie, a website and blog where you’ll find the talk revolves around the things I love…dolls, sewing, and whatever connects them together. Occasionally I may throw in a great recipe or a home improvement project I’ve finished.

I’m Jeanne… a Christian, a wife, a mom to a 26 and a 29 year old, a seamstress, a lover of fabrics and trims, a very amateur photographer, and someone who wants to make this little site a place where you can spend a few fun minutes each day being blessed! I love reading, cooking and baking, a variety of crafts, antique shopping, working on our 1892 fixer upper house, and loving my family. I hope you’ll join me as we travel down this road together. No telling where it might take us…

Long story short, Jeanne runs a daily blog (the dedication!! *cries*) and two online shops.

-----------------------------------

Adorable Photos

Jeanne really loves what she does and treats each of her dolls like a miniature daughter, which is adorable. It's clear that she has a genuine affection for each of her girls, all of whom she refers to by name and is very careful to only put them in outfits that she feels fits "them". Not unlike a mom lol XD

Here are some of my favorite images from her gallery (as seen here):

I love the detail and the sweetness of this.
the lovely bodice area is darling <3

this one just has...so. much. class.

...this is really weirdly nostalgic to see, in that I'm pretty sure there are pictures of my childhood like this lol XD

Here are some of my favorite images from her blog posts:

such a cute Easter/Spring themed shot!
I particularly appreciate the addition of the white picket fence.

self-explanatory. so lux lol

this could literally be the basis for a real siblings' photo somewhere

As we all know, photos can really make or break a sale, and with photos like these, it's no wonder that doll lovers everywhere are FLOCKING to Jeanne to get a piece of the action.

-----------------------------------

Want to check out Jeanne's stuff?
Wait. What am I saying? OF COURSE YOU DO! Links here :)

You won't regret it. Next time we hang out (either at my place or yours), feel free to ask me to bring/make tea! I would love to get someone else hooked on these delicious blends.

Leftover Break Items | #WeeklyWednesday2018

One thing that's less satisfying about actually keeping to a regular schedule is that there is inevitably a few weeks here and there where I'm literally doing nothing of interest lol

So I'm "cheating" a bit here, I'll start off with the reaction video that I filmed this past Sunday and go into some miscellaneous bits from winter break that didn't quite make it in the last time. :)

Sound good? Here we go!

-------------------------

Family Photos: Christmas and New Year
Not much as far as text to share, but these photos are cute, so it's something I'm sharing :)

after an evening Christmas Eve service at church

this is the photo we are sending out for cards this year (late Christmas/early Chinese New Year)
Dad took off his glasses for this one, so lots of people have already commented saying that

Food: Japanese Snacks and Fat Patties
One fun thing that we took advantage of while Ashriel was home for break was her newfound culinary skills with Japanese snacks, which she had learned over the course of her internship with Japan House in Champaign. Here are some pics (and a funny video) of a mochi making process :)

have I mentioned recently how much I love my sister?
flippin' adorable child

Kim came over to hang out and make mochi with us

Mom's made a plethora of dishes while Ash was home, in an effort to give her everything that she's missed out on, so here is a picture of her "last supper" before she returned to Champaign, as it were.

kaarage (Japanese fried chicken) and cereal prawns

I also went out for dinner + catch up sesh recently with my dear friend (who I affectionately refer to as my trivia dragon because she's a freaking treasure trove of information and is SO intelligent) at a local place here in Carbondale called Fat Patties.

Kristi and her food, my food

Overall, I wouldn't say I LOVED it, but the place has great battered+fried green beans and great fries, so I wouldn't be opposed to going there again if peeps want to hang out there. :)

I got a good, solid 3 hours with my seamstress friend, Gail, as well, but no photos. :/
Whoops.

-------------------------

Next week's #WeeklyWednesday will be significantly more interesting, as I've got a dinner with my beloved Juan family this upcoming Friday evening and the #adventurebuddies wedding (David and Emily) this weekend in Springfield.

I've got a #FeatureFriday for you in a couple of days to share about one of my absolute favorite ladies on the planet, so look forward to it! There's somewhat of a self-improvement update with it, so I'll be talking about that as well.

~See you Friday!

Alexander Rybak - Return (inspired by Toothless) | #MusicMonday2018

Image result for toothless
"Ariel! Why are you starting a #MusicMonday2018 with a picture of Hiccup and Toothless? "

Well...do you guys remember Alexander Rybak? The adorkable Norwegian singer, composer, violinist? If not, read about him here

Over the break, I spent some time with some friends and we had a sleepover (which means little sleep and lots of movies lol). One of the movies we watched was How to Train Your Dragon, which was promptly followed by How to Train Your Dragon 2. This reminded me of this musical gem that you've probably never heard of.

To bring you guys up to speed, did you know that Alexander Rybak was the Norwegian voice actor for none other than *drumroll*
.
.
.

Hiccup!! In both movies! <3
You weren't expecting that, were you?! ;)

-----------------------------------------

So who better to write a song inspired by Toothless about friendship and flying that a man who has voice-acted as our beloved Hiccup himself? <3

I love the chill vibes of this piece...The professional quality of the sound, the insane skills of this man on this violin, and the beautiful harmonies all make for some delicious ear candy.

I hope you love this song and that you go back and rewatch those movies!
This video is slightly more unique coming from Alexander because he tends to make full-blown MVs and this one has a "closer to home" feeling, which is very endearing lol :D

-----------------------------------------

Who else loves HTTYD and HTTYD2? Comment below with what your favorite part of the movie was.

MY personal favorites from HTTYD was pretty much any part of Hiccup+Toothless' interactions and HTTYD2 favorites were the dance+song between Stoick and Valka (not expounding on who they are to avoid spoilers for those of you who haven't watched it), as well as any part with Astrid+Stormfly (Astrid became a new favorite character in HTTYD2, didn't care much for her in HTTYD) and Hiccup+Toothless, as well as the ending where Toothless is all glowy and blue (to avoid too many spoilers).

Hope you enjoyed this #MusicMonday2018!
See you all Wednesday!
