International Easter Sunday: CCF Covers 因着十架爱 | #WeeklyWednesday

It is FINALLY here, guys! Thank you so much for your patience!
CCF (Calvary Chinese Fellowship) performed 因着十架爱: By the Love at the Cross for our International Easter Sunday event! If anyone cares to listen, this is what the original song (before CCF went to play with it) sounded like.

Now, without further ado, here is the video! Whee~

-------------------------------------

Unfortunately, due to the craziness of the event and the number of people going place, we only had ONE group photo. Sorry :(

This is our entire CCF (Calvary Chinese Fellowship) group that came out for the event. I'll try to highlight the performers (specifically) and what they did here:

Back Row (from the left):
Chinese in Red: Dad - tenor voice + harmony
American in Green: Alex - soprano voice + harmony
American in White: Ethan - our "little drummer boy" ;)
Chinese in White: ZhouTing - bass voice

From Row (from the left):
Chinese in Pink: Ash - ocarina (the shell flute thing for those who have been calling it that), alto voice + harmony, piano
Chinese in White: Kim - soprano voice + harmony
Chinese in Cream: Yvonne - melody
Chinese in Long White: Mom - melody
Me (blue shirt) - piano, melody + alto voice + harmony, rap
American in Multi-color: Livvy - cello (the cello issues in the video weren't entirely up to her, guys. The speakers were in the way of her bow. Hazard of a LIVE performance)

NOT PICTURED: Caleb - bassist (he left almost immediately with his wifey to attend a family Easter thing)

If any of you are reading this, thank you SO SO MUCH for all of your hard work! I was so blessed to get to do this with all of you, and what an honor it is to be able to praise God with everything I have (creatively speaking). <3

-------------------------------------

Here are the lyrics to the rap I wrote for the chorus of the song.
Considering it's my first original rap...it's not...bad? haha XD

Our sins condemned Him and we handed Him over
The mass, they mocked Him, shouted "Crucify!"
But that's not gonna stop my Bright Star, my nova,
'cause on the third day, He was raised to life!

Yo, He was carrying our afflictions and bearing our pain.
D'yall know that this is the reason our Jesus was slain?
Now as He's healing our spirits and granting us peace,
start taking notes 'cause this is just part of what God will release!

My God, He came as a Man, He was meek, faithful, lowly,
despised, and rejected, yet guileless and holy.
We were made clean and our sins were forgiven
'cause the Bride's getting ready for a wedding in Heaven.

He gave up His body and was broken for me.
Whosoever believes shall live eternally.
I've no guilt in life and no fear in death
'cause our Jesus, He loved when He gave His last breath.

What do you think? Comment below so I can get better. haha XD
-------------------------------------
Here are some things that people said to me about the rap.
Hopefully you get a laugh out of them. I know I did!!

"Sista...when are you BREATHING?"

"Cool rap. Didn't know that humans were capable of speaking that fast, but consider me reeducated."

"OMG OMG MOOOOOOOM!!! That's the lady who rapped!! I can't believe she did that!! MOOOOOOOOOM!!!"

"Get it, GIIIIIIIIRL!"

"I have...never seen an Asian female rapper for worship music. What have we been missing out on?!"

"YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!"

"I officially rename you DJRiel." (name is up for debate, some at church had other ideas lol)

"You couldn't see me while you were rapping but I was just jammin' the whole time."

"+ 15 points for using the word guileless in a rap XD"

"Sista! These lyrics are FIERCE. WHOOT!"

So...I guess the final word is that people liked it and were blessed by it?
Praise God! :)

-------------------------------------

Hope you liked the performance!

Shiny - (DISNEY METAL VERSION) ~ Moana cover by Jonathan Young | #MusicMonday

"WHAAAAAT?! Ariel listens to METAL?! What is this world coming to?!"

Okay, I know that's what just went through your mind, but calm down.
You're right, I typically don't like metal as a genre, but can I agree that it's actually highly suitable to make Disney villains just that much more hardcore? YES. And you KNOW how I love me some Disney villain songs....mwahahahahahahahaha! (yep)

Anyway, to the case in point, Jonathan Young is EXTREMELY TALENTED. No joke. This guy plays a ton of instruments and he can sing, and man, does he do it well. He does a lot of rock and metal style covers, and while there are still many elements of the genre (i.e., the screaming) that I don't care for, there ARE some of his covers that I absolutely LOVE and this is one of them. If I'm looking for some good quality Disney villain covers...Jonathan's the man. No question about it.

-----------------------------------------

Shiny - (DISNEY METAL VERSION) ~ Moana cover by Jonathan Young is everything AWESOME about Disney songs.

- You love and hate the "dark, scary voice".
- You get chills up your spine when he does the villainous (somewhat animalistic) growls because you feel very much like you're about to be eaten by a giant crab.
- You can appreciate the contemptuous tone of a villain who knows what he wants and how he's going to get it.

But this bit here...this takes the cake. Songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of Hamilton) took notice of the cover and posted it to Twitter. How freaking cool is that?! Jonathan, you are a very lucky villain. You just hit the jackpot of all things awesome.

My favorite parts of this song were: (I'm stating now that I love his voice, so I'm not gonna keep rehashing this now that you know, 'k?)
- the overall "mafia boss" type glam of the whole thing, complete with "bokeh" type lighting
- the way this was shot (the arrangement, the cuts, his suit...)
- "beginners" *growl*
- evil laugh
- the chord at the end

Give this a listen, and I promise, if you're a Disney fan and you loved Moana...you'll be REAL SHINY (Moana, not Firefly reference) once you've finished the song!

-----------------------------------------

Do you know of any other covers from Moana that I should listen to? I've listened to JunCurryAhn and HollensFamily related covers already, so comment below if you've got another one. If I love it, it might just end up as a #MusicMonday episode!

Subscribe and be SHINY!!

The Rare Orchid | #FeatureFriday

It's our first #FeatureFriday!!
I'm so excited to start sharing these talented artists with you all, you have ABSOLUTELY. NO. IDEA.

--------------------------------------------

Meredith Lee is a California based social worker > crafter > and now entrepreneur who created The Rare Orchid 12+ years ago.She creates GORGEOUS washi papers.

"Washi, like that stuff in WalMart for crafting right?"

Eheh. NO. That stuff in WalMart, while it serves its purpose, is a simplistic and Westernized product of the stuff Meredith makes. In my book, that stuff doesn't even COMPARE in quality. I'd much rather save my money that would've bought me 50 washi tapes from WalMart and spend it on 25 from Meredith (that's not an exact conversion rate, so don't quote me). Long story short, if you want the good stuff, go to her.

(copied from her descriptions on her site)
Each color layer of the design is hand-silkscreened in Japan by artisans on to a thick, fibrous mulberry paper (called kozo). The word "washi" (和紙) literally translates to "Japanese paper", 和 “wa” meaning “Japanese” and 紙 “shi” meaning “paper”. Chiyogami (also sometimes referred to as Yuzen) washi is a traditional Japanese art form of silkscreening patterns color by color on to kozo paper; and steams from kimono designs in the Edo period.

The Rare Orchid's washi papers are so soft (like fabric) and yet quality stuff that they're great to work with. I use her papers to make stuff all the time!! She suggests using the washi papers "for scrapbooking, cards, jewelry making, weddings, or anything else you can think of"! I use them to make bookmarks for TZArtisan, and occasionally, with her sticker washi, to accent cards and different things that I've made to give it that elegantly gorgeous Japanese aesthetic.

--------------------------------------------

Here are some shots from The Rare Orchid's Facebook page, featuring some of their beautiful products!!

Washi Pegs: these are really cute, and super well made ♥

Washi sheets: best paper ever, she has them available in different sizes
AAAAAH~ Just look at the pretties!! ♥

These are all available (in some form) in her Etsy shop, so if you like 'em, you should go and pick them up! :D She's always announcing sales on her Instagram, I'd say there's maybe one every other month?

--------------------------------------------

Here are a couple shots of her stuff being displayed and in action (from her Facebook):

Beautiful cards made from washi paper sold by a non-profit organization for $2-$5.

WSIU Expressions Broadcast Announcement | #WeeklyWednesday

Happy #WeeklyWednesday, everyone! We're starting with a BANG! Whoot!
So, at 1:30pm (you're writing about the future, Ariel? *dramatic GASP*) today, I'll be filming for WSIU's program called Expressions, wearing my new Japanese yukata and showcasing tsumami kanzashi.

Here's a little more about said program:
"Expressions Turns The Spotlight On Our Region's Artists"
The Midwestern region is home to an established and growing body of artists. From veterans to newcomers, our region's diverse arts community is making its creative mark on the region and beyond. Expressions showcases the creative abilities, techniques, and inspirations of these regional artists.

I posted a yukata outfit choice vote online, and WOW, was the response overwhelming!
I'm going to post them both here, but about 90% of the votes came in for the one that I have on. These photos were taken back when I first bought my two new yukatas, one was worn by me and the other was worn by my best Chinese friend, Yvonne, because we were taking her photo for the #tzartastic contest. haha XD
Me, black yukata with golden yellow vertical lines and yellow + pink + white flowers
Yvonne, dark blue yukata with water swirls, goldfish, and full moons (or are those the paper nets to catch goldfish? lol)
I'm super nervous for this, guys. Even as I'm typing this now, I'm counting down the hours till I have to hop on camera. PRAY FOR ME!!

------------------------------

I was wondering when I'd be broadcasted, so I went looking, whaddaya know, they're broadcasting my episode on MOTHER'S DAY!! WHAT?! I will be appearing on Season 6, Episode 8. Stay tuned for announcements regarding where you can see this online (if you're not local to Carbondale).
Let's be real, guys. When I saw the date and realized it was Mother's Day, my first thought (no lie) was, "Wow, so if I mess this up, my mother gets to see this on her special day? Talk about a real dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow, dishonor on your whole family! type situation" (Mulan reference, for you non-Disney people).

------------------------------

But really...I'm so worried about whether or not I'll be doing the people I will be representing on the program justice. Some of you (undoubtedly) will want to shake me by the shoulders and tell me that I'm overthinking things, but you know...? I'm really not.

This is who I am:
- Singaporean Chinese
- intermediate level tsumami kanzashi maker, budding tsumami zaiku (the traditional technique) user
- hobbyist who's trying to learn how to do this right (business wise, anyway)
- entirely self-taught

This is who I'm unintentionally representing with this WSIU Expressions opportunity:
- Japanese culture
- tsumami kanzashi and tsumami zaiku
- the TZArtisan members (all of whom have been doing this longer than I have)
- professionalism

I've reached an balance (within myself) of trusting God to work through me to exhibit Kingdom Culture, to be able to show respect for a culture that I enjoy a lot of, but quite frankly, isn't my own. I NEVER EVER want to come off as disrespectful to a people whose very nature to "not inconvenience" anyone is so ingrained that you hear "sorry" more often than "thank you" when you do something for them (heard this STRAIGHT FROM a Japanese friend's mouth, and it's something that I have noticed over the years, this isn't something I'm just throwing in out of nowhere). I've definitely had situations where people tried to throw in aspects of Singaporean culture into their own lives, some bits of our accent, some bits of...whatever, and thought that they were being cute.

I'm not often "triggered" (as is the term these days) by jokes about being Asian and the like, but I'm not kidding around when I say that some of this stuff that people do when "representing" my culture isn't only NOT funny, it's downright offensive. Those who know me know that I never hold stock in being "politically correct", but I do believe in being respectful.

Long story short, totally fine to like a culture and incorporate pieces into your own life, but please be respectful, and better yet, find someone FROM that culture and ask them if what you're doing is okay!! DON'T ASSUME!

I know, I know, you're probably wondering, "Ariel!! It was Easter Sunday! Do you not have anything about what you did that day or about the performance where you rapped?! I've been waiting for this!!" Yes, yes, I understand. And believe me, I want to share. In fact, I've been WAITING to share the rap with everyone, however, given the fact that since I was the one performing, I wasn't the one filming. I'm waiting to get the footage of the event from those that DID film, so while my Easter post will be "late", it'll hopefully be up next Wednesday. Sorry >_<

------------------------------

Subscribe if you haven't already and be sure to share this blog with your friends if you feel like they'd be able to connect and relate to it. I'm WAY more comfortable with meeting new friends online than meeting new people in person XD Those of you who have known me for a while know this, and some of you reading are probably online friends anyway!

In addition, if you're reading, leave a comment below so that my post doesn't look so lonely. Some of you text me instead, which I appreciate, but help me convince passing readers that I'm not just posting with no one reading, yeah? Thanks! ;)

If I Ever Fall in Love - Pentatonix ft Jason Derulo | #MusicMonday

It's no secret that I'm a fan of Pentatonix (aka PTX). Their vocal range and beautiful arrangements, not to mention their spot-on harmonies make people like me very happy :P Let me be clear and state that there are songs of theirs that I DON'T like, so don't assume that just because it has PTX on it, that I'm 100% for everything they do. So, that said...

-----------------------------------------

Here's a basic breakdown of PTX and their roles for those who don't know:
Scott Hoying – baritone
Mitch Grassi – tenor

Kirstin Maldonado – mezzo-soprano
Avi Kaplan – bass
Kevin Olusola – beatboxing

If I Ever Fall in Love - Pentatonix ft Jason Derulo is one of my favorites from their 2015 album, Pentatonix. The album is made up of mostly originals, with a few covers thrown in for good measure. This was one of them and I'm really glad it made it.

Small disclaimer, I don't listen to pop music unless it happens to be covered by an artist I'm already listening to, which hilariously enough, PTX (in particular) brings quite a bit of it to my attention. Friends who know me well are sometimes surprised that I know a song that is playing over the intercom at the mall or that I can hum along to a song on the radio, but almost immediately realize that I only know it because someone I listen to covered it. haha XD

Long story short, I had no idea who Jason Derulo is until I saw this video. Oops.
Please don't hate me. :(

My favorite parts of this song were: (know that I pretty much always love their harmonies, so to keep from repeating the obvious, I'm officially announcing here that their harmonies are always on point)
- the lead in, how they added the voices layer by layer
- the "all in white" concept
- the transitions from Jason's lead to Scott's lead was impeccably seamless
- Jason's high notes. WOW. Speaking of, Kevin Olusula actually sang Jason's part during their live concert in St. Louis (that also happened to be on Avi's birthday) that I went to last year. IT WAS STELLAR <3

That said, enjoy!

-----------------------------------------

And that concludes our first #MusicMonday episode! What do we think?
Let me know what else you'd like in the comments! :)

Allergies, Shopping Sprees, and MWF Hashtagies! (that last one is a bit forced...oh well)

Ah, springtime. Beautiful flowers, lovely weather, and oh…what’s this yellow stuff on the ground that makes MORE flowers as time goes by? It gets on your car, in your hair, on your clothes, and just about everything, and if you don’t take car to get it all OFF of you before you go to bed….*evil laugh* you’re in for a world of hurt.

https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1428856472086-8674d9cbd6bc?dpr=1&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1500&h=1125&q=80&cs=tinysrgb&crop=&bg=

POLLEN. UGH. I hate allergies. I wasn’t allergic to pollen before coming to the States, you know. It started when I was in the 4th grade, I suddenly found that my nose would itch, the roof of my mouth would itch, and my eyes started swelling like crazy. Kind of pink eye (or is it red eye???) ish, without actually having that in my system. Anyway, to make matters worse, I went camping with a bunch of girls from church as a girls’ night out thing that the church organized, was exposed to billows of smoke from the campfire (no way to avoid it because there was so much of it everywhere), and was crying in pain, unable to breathe properly or sleep, and miserable for hours. One of the girls’ moms had to take me home, a 2 hour drive, at 2am. I felt so bad for her…

Anyway, here I am as an adult and allergies still make me miserable. It’s not fun having to turn down friends who want to go hiking or just “enjoy the weather outside” and go for a walk because I can’t breathe. I’m also much more sensitive to insect bites as compared to the average person; they swell up a good 2x larger than most. It’s annoying and quite frankly, I don’t enjoy having to take allergy meds all through the year because believe it or not, even in summer, fall, or winter, if I don’t take meds for a couple of days, I won’t be able to breathe…

If you’re allergy free…count yourself blessed, because having allergies SERIOUSLY SUCKS. I think I’ll make a YouTube video about it…yeah. That sounds like fun :P If you haven't subscribed yet, here's the link.

---------------------------------------------------------------

MOVING ON!~
Have you ever seen “haul” videos on YouTube? You know, the ones that start out with a line like “What’s in my bag?” where the person CLEARLY went on a shopping spree that you’re jealous they had the money for and are now displaying all the lovely things they bought in one shot?

I love shopping sprees. I’m also slightly bad in the sense that all of the ones for clothing seem to end up with me returning 60% of it back to the store because after a second glance, away from the initial excitement of buying things, I don’t look great in it. (graphic chart of my thought process coming soon when I have time haha XD)
https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1470309864661-68328b2cd0a5?dpr=1&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1500&h=1000&q=80&cs=tinysrgb&crop=&bg=
By @artificialphotography from Unsplash.com
Unsurprisingly, given how crafty I am, I don’t quite follow a coherent thought process when buying crafts. It’s ESPECIALLY dangerous when I have money to spend, and quite frankly, one of the prime reasons I’m not as rich as I could and should be.

But one of my favorite things to do is buy stuff from artists I like, particularly if I like the artists themselves as people. I have a select few that I care about enough to support on a regular basis.
I’m going to do a short series of artists I support in the following categories: art, crafts, and music.

---------------------------------------------------------------

AND SO!! This has led me to make the following decision in which I once again shoot myself in the foot by giving myself more work, but given that I can schedule posts ahead of time, this shouldn’t be too bad (said Moana before her boat capsized…). I’m splitting off posts into more categories, which would allow me to share more!

They are: Music Monday (#musicmonday), Weekly Wednesday (#weeklywednesday), and Feature Friday (#featurefriday). Really, Ariel? Matching first letters? Really?…yeah. I don’t remember what that’s called. So much for English class lol XD

Music Monday: I share a song I’ve been obsessed with, YouTube link and all, as well as a quick opinion of what I like or don’t like about the song, and maybe how bad this obsession is. Have I been singing it for weeks? Whistling occasionally? Full out random breaking into song? That kind of thing. :)

Weekly Wednesday: my weekly update, what I’ve been up to, essentially what I’m been posting thus far.

Feature Friday: I can share the works of another artist that I love, which will hopefully 1) demonstrate how much I love them XD and 2) share with you the many things that the talented people I know are doing.

---------------------------------------------------------------

That's all for this week! Next Wednesday, you'll see our Resurrection Sunday celebration, a little...something something from me that I'm very excited about, and photos from the event! Music Monday and Feature Friday will be in full-swing next week as well, with a YouTube video going up for the Feature Friday! :D

Comment below and because I'm terrible at remembering who I've told what, SUBSCRIBE for more updates (somewhere to the top right, I think?).

Have a great weekend, everyone! Enjoy this season to be with your families and remember what, who, and why we're celebrating this weekend! (I'll talk about it more in the next post)

Love ya! :D
